Meeting the Prerequisites for a Degree in Surgical Technology

The first step on the way to becoming a surgical technician is ensuring that you meet the prerequisites for enrollment into an associate degree program in surgical technology.

Typically, colleges will expect all applicants to have already graduated from high school and have a diploma to prove that fact. It is not unusual for colleges to also ask potential students to submit extra information like SAT results, ACT results, references from former teachers or a written admission essay. The exact prerequisites will vary depending on the competitiveness of the college.

Choosing the Right College

You will also need to decide between the many different colleges that offer associate degrees in surgical technology. If you are a busy student, you live a long drive from the nearest college campus or you have an irregular work schedule, then the best school for you might be an accredited online college.

Completing Two Years of Courses

Once you have chosen the right college and enrolled into the degree program, you should be prepared for approximately two years of courses, or four semesters. During that time, you will prepare for a career as a surgical technician, which might involve a syllabus full of classes like medical ethics, patient care, surgical hygiene, anatomy, surgical procedures and microbiology.
