What is a Master's in Science Education?

A master's degree in science education is a one to two year advanced degree that focuses on preparing students to create curriculum for science programs, teach advanced students or determine how to assess students through exams and projects.

Many aspiring master's degree students don't realize that there are three different types of science education degrees to choose from at this level: the master of education in science, the master of arts in science education and the master of science in education.

All three are very similar, and all can be available through accredited online colleges, but it is important to learn more about each before enrolling into any specific program.

What are the Prerequisites for this Advanced Degree Program?

Like most master's degree programs, this degree requires applicants to already have a bachelor's degree completed. While most applicants will have studied either science or education as their major, there is some flexibility depending on your career goals and your previous work experience in the field.

Most master's degree programs in science education also require students to have some classroom experience and be certified to teach in at least one state.

Some competitive programs may also expect applicants to have a minimum grade point average from their undergraduate transcripts, GRE scores or references from previous employers in either science or education fields.

What Courses are Typically Included in the Curriculum?

It is important to note that the exact curriculum for a master's degree in science education can vary substantially from one university to the next.

However, the objective is the same across the board, so most degree programs will offer courses like science education issues, how to teach science, leadership skills in the classroom, science curriculum planning and research for science education.

What Careers are Open to Master's Degree Holders in Science Education?

Many students who graduate with a master's degree in science education are so inspired that they head right back to the classroom. Of course, they will now be able to earn more and enjoy increased job security.

If you want to explore a science education career outside of the traditional classroom, you might want to consider positions like instructional coordinator, state board of education assessor or college lecturer.

If you are ready to advance your career and try something new, then consider a master's degree in science education from one of the many excellent accredited online colleges.
