If you are interested in working with patients on a regular basis, enjoy learning about human anatomy and physiology and have an interest or background in machinery or technology, then you might be the right fit for a job in radiology. Most radiologists will first need to earn a degree in radiological sciences online through an accredited online college in order to better prepare for a thriving career in the field.

Typical Course Curriculum For This Degree

A standard bachelor's degree in radiologic sciences will have 120 credits that consist primarily of liberal arts curriculum courses, but they will also need to take classes specifically focused on understanding and practicing radiology.

Some of the courses you might be expected to take include the ethics of radiology, the physics involved in radiologic sciences, the technique involved in radiology, evaluating and understanding the film in a medical setting, discussing results and images with patients and maintaining the radiology equipment. Online radiologic sciences degrees take an average of four years to complete, although online students have the option to progress through the curriculum at their own pace in many cases.

Prerequisites for a Degree in Radiological Sciences

To pursue a bachelor's degree in radiologic sciences, you will first need to have a high school degree or a general education degree, be over the age of 18, have a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and have a demonstrated interest in this field. If you have already earned an associate degree in a similar or related degree, you may need to have a different grade point average in order for your credits to successfully transfer from one program or school to the next.

If you have worked as a radiology technician in the past, you may be able to earn credits for your work experience rather than taking some of the technique or maintenance classes in a traditional educational setting.

Possible Career Options After Graduation

After earning an online bachelor's degree in radiological sciences, students can pursue a range of different careers or advanced education. Many graduates decide to gain more knowledge in the field with a master's degree in radiology specializations, or take refresher courses in order to help them pass the radiology licensing exam in their individual state.

Those who are eager to begin working right away can find careers in hospitals, nursing homes, physical therapy centers or private practices. You might work day to day as a radiology operator or specialist, train others to work as radiology technicians or even sell and promote new types of radiology machines to other doctors and hospitals.

Personal Traits in Successful Workers in the Field

The most successful graduates in the field of radiologic sciences are able to make quick and educated decisions, be incredibly detail oriented when necessary, communicate well with patients and clients and enjoy long shifts but great benefits. Although working as a radiology technician may be relatively routine in the day to day, many aspects of radiology are exciting and constantly changing, so workers should be willing to embrace that.

Whether you are a radiology technician ready to advance your career, a recent high school graduate who wants to find a lucrative position or an adult looking for a career change, an online degree in radiological sciences can be a great choice.
