What to Expect When Earning a Bachelor of Public Administration Degree

Earning a bachelor's degree in public administration will consist of 120 credits that take an average of four years for students to complete. The vast majority of courses will consist of course related subjects such as legal issues in public administration, making public decisions, managing nonprofit organizations, urban planning, fundraising and dealing with emergency situations. In addition to these courses, students will also take up to 40 credits of courses related to general education studies. These might include subjects like math, science, written communications or history.

Careers to Choose From After Graduation

One of the many reasons that potential college students decide to pursue degrees in public administration is simply because there is such a large number of careers to choose from after graduation. Some of the most popular options include working as a probation officer, health services administrator, community services manager, public relations specialist, city manager, customs inspector or social worker.

In addition, this degree will provide graduates with a solid background in communications, organizational skills and administration. Many employers in a range of industries value these attributes, so it is not unusual for graduates to find lucrative careers in alternative fields like business, retail, finance or even health care.

Prerequisites for a Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration

In order to be eligible to apply to earn a bachelor's degree in public administration, you will need to have a high school education with a 2.5 minimum grade point average on a 4.0 scale, have taken the SAT or ACT exam with the required scores, be over the age of 18 at the start of classes and have completed a written or online application for your desired degree program. In addition, those who desire successful careers in the field of public administration should have excellent communication skills, be incredibly organized and have the ability to multitask when necessary.

If you are planning to attend an accredited online college for your degree, you will also need to have regular access to an Internet connection, a computer, speakers for live lectures and a printer for printing off essays or study guides.

Advantages of Choosing an Online Degree

Many students choose to earn their degrees online in order to save time spent commuting to a college campus, in order to work and study at the same time, in order to have flexibility when it comes to scheduling classes and in order to advance their education without sacrificing time spent with their family. Online degrees can save you money, give you more options in life and make it easier to get ahead in your career.
