    In many ways, an operations manager is much like a general manager. However, instead of overseeing an entire business or company, the operations manager takes control of one specific area. An operations manager can work in any type of field or industry, including areas as diverse as catering, finance and manufacturing.

    Operations managers need to understand the goals of the company owners and determine how to reach those goals through large projects such as the launch of a new product, building a new hotel building or even catering a large professional event. The work involves detailed plans, creating and following budgets, ordering supplies, recruiting staff and ensuring that the day to day operations follow the overall schedule for the project.

    Degrees Available in the Field

    Those interested in becoming an operations manager will need some kind of educational qualification in order to be a viable candidate for a position in the field. Aspiring operations managers can choose between the associate degree, the bachelor's degree and the master's degree. An associate degree is a two-year program that involves 60 credits, a bachelor's degree is 120 credits and takes an average of four years to complete and the master's degree is an advanced degree that takes one to two years to complete and comes after first earning a bachelor's degree.
