Pick a Subject to Specialize In

Although it is possible to major in middle school education, most students much prefer to focus on one subject that they can teach and specialize in once they are employed in a school.

Some of the most common subjects for middle school teachers include algebra, math, biology, physics, English, social studies or government. Ideally, the subject you choose should be one that you have some experience with and feel comfortable committing to for the next four years.

Earn a Bachelor's Degree in the Major of Your Choice

With a specialty in mind, you can get ready to complete a bachelor's degree in the major of your choosing. Typically, a bachelor's degree will take students four years to complete, and the degree is spaced out over eight semesters of 15 to 18 credits apiece.

However, those students who study through an accredited online college will have far more flexibility when it comes to studying, and everything from lectures to exams can be done right from the comfort of home or anywhere else with an Internet connection.

    Minor in Middle School Education

Along with majoring in the subject you plan to teach, it is important to minor in middle school education and teaching. This is what will prepare you to lead a classroom of sixth, seventh and eighth-graders effectively, so it is something that you can't skip over.

A minor will only be a small part of the overall degree program, but giving it your full attention ensures that you are confident during student teaching semesters or classroom experience observations.

    Gain Classroom Experience

Even with all the right credentials, it is unlikely that you will be employed or licensed without gaining classroom experience. Essentially, this is unpaid time where you help a licensed teacher in a middle school, ask questions and learn from them.

This can be included in your degree's curriculum and count for credit, or it may be a post-graduate certificate.

Get State Licensure When you Plan to Work

The final step in the path to becoming a middle school teacher is to get certified. The state board of education where you want to work will check your background, degree and classroom experience in order to ascertain whether you are the right fit for this career.

If you see yourself teaching in a middle school classroom just four years from now, then take the first step and begin earning your bachelor's degree right away.
