What is an LPN?

An LPN is a licensed practical nurse. These nurses are responsible for monitoring, treating and caring for patients in a range of settings that might include nursing homes, hospice centers, patient homes, schools, clinics and even hospitals.

Some of the daily tasks of an LPN are things like wound cleaning and dressing, updating patient records after each visit, discussing wound hygiene with patients after treatment or recording symptoms and information according to patient's family members.

Becoming an LPN requires passing the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses, known to most as simply the NCLEX-PN. To pass this test, most aspiring practical nurses take a one-year certification and preparation course online or through a local community or vocational college.

What is an LVN?

An LVN, or licensed vocational nurse, is in many ways identical to that of an LPN. Like LPNs, LVNs work under the supervision of physicians or registered nurses and are tasked with patient care.

The difference is that LVNs are only found within the states of Texas and California, and they have to pass a state-specific licensing examination rather than the national NCLEX-PN.

LPN and LVN Courses and Programs

Whether you want to earn your LVN or your LPN, you will want to pick out a one-year training course that can best prepare you for the examination.

The best programs will include classes in subjects like basic nursing techniques, medical vocabulary, pharmacology, infection control, patient hygiene and medical safety.

Earning Nursing Certifications Online

You can choose to study for the LPN or LVN certification exams at a vocational training school or a community college campus, but online courses can also be an effective way to prepare.

Online nursing courses are also a convenient option for those who need to work full time or anyone who lives far from a suitable training location.

The job outlook for vocational and practical nurses is positive, and predictions point to a 22 percent increase in demand over the next decade.

To secure one of these positions and to make a difference in the field of healthcare, passing the LVN or LPN certification course will be the first step.
