To Click Or Go To Class – That Is The Question

The debate between the effectiveness and popularity of online degree programs with the traditional campus programs rages on. Some prefer the structure and face-to-face contact of a campus classroom. Others prefer the flexibility of the online experience. Here's a summary of how students learn through both programs.

Online Versus Traditional

A 1999 survey conducted by Professor Kathryn Holleque in the Division of Education and Psychology at Valley City State University gave some insight into the preferences of students when it came to online classes. Fifty-three percent of those surveyed stated that completing coursework online is more convenient than the traditional campus model.

Also, a majority of respondents agreed that completing coursework online better met the variety of learning needs of students. But the traditional classroom isn't without its place. Most of those students surveyed stated that a combination of online and classroom learning methods were most effective.

The Traditional Classroom Setting

The traditional campus program has long been the only option for students who wish to earn a degree. In this traditional model, students were held to rigid class schedules, often at the convenience of the instructor. And because the class sizes were so large, one-on-one contact with a professor for extra help was difficult, if not impossible.

The traditional campus model also required students to pay a variety of fees in addition to tuition that supported the everyday functions of the university. There were very few options for the student of yesterday.

The Online Classes of Today

With the fusion of technology and education, the availability of accredited online programs has increased over the years. Students wanting the opportunity to continue their education without sacrificing their current personal and professional obligations are amazed at the flexibility of online learning.

Effective learning online is the direct result of convenience of study schedules, the opportunity to interact with online peers, and instant feedback from professors through e-mail and other forms of instant messaging. The classroom of tomorrow has arrived, and students are reaping the benefits by the thousands.

Combination Programs

Many colleges offer combination programs so that students can do some work online, while attending class at other times. Classes are offered at night and on weekends as well. The choices are more abundant than ever for adults to earn their college degrees, and top colleges and universities are committed to helping students succeed with a program designed to fit their individual needs.
