Read on to learn more about the various types of degrees available in the field, what the prerequisites are for these degrees, what subjects you can expect to study, choosing a specialization and career prospects for graduates.

Exploring the Types of Available Visual & Performing Arts Degrees

There are three major degree levels available for students in the field of visual and performing arts. These are the associate degree, the bachelor's degree and the master's degree. An associate degree is a two-year program that is made up of roughly 60 credits and will prepare students for entry level careers in the industry.

The most popular degree in visual and performing arts is the bachelor's degree, a four-year undergraduate program that will be sufficient for the majority of careers within the field. To secure any of the top careers and management roles, however, a master's degree is required. This terminal degree in the field takes two years to complete but first requires a bachelor's degree.

Prerequisites for a Degree

It is important to realize that the prerequisites for degrees in visual and performing arts differ substantially depending on the school offering the program and the subject being studied. Dancers, for example, may need to have a live audition as part of their application. Across the board, however, aspiring students should expect to need a high school diploma or general education degree in order to be admitted into any college program offering degrees in visual and performing arts.

Typical Curriculum for a Visual and Performing Arts Degree

A typical degree in visual and performing arts will include some courses that focus on the core subject and specialization but also a number of courses that fulfill general education requirements to meet your college's guidelines for graduates. Some of the courses related to your major that you can expect to study include music performance, dramatic literature, history of the theater, dance theory and photography, art appreciation or voice lessons.

Choosing a Degree Specialization

While a general degree in visual and performing arts is available from many colleges, most students prefer to narrow down their major and focus on just one discipline. For many, this decision is an easy one. Simply choose the hobby or gift that you are most passionate about, whether that is singing, painting, acting or dancing.

Career Prospects for Graduates

There can be no denying the fact that there is fierce competition within the creative field of visual and performing arts. Aside from becoming a singer, actor, dancer or artist, many graduates are able to find work as choreographers, dance or acting teachers, management for new talent in the industry or freelance artists and designers.

Even if you are busy, have family obligations or hold down a full time job, it is possible to complete your degree in visual and performing arts online. Thanks to accredited online colleges, all you will need is a computer, access to the Internet and the time to study from the comfort of your home.
