What Do You Need to Get Started?

If you're serious about a career in medical laboratory assisting, then before you can even consider getting a degree you should have a few important things completed.

Applicants to college degree programs should have completed high school, be on track to graduate within a few months or have the equivalent of a GED, or general education degree. You should also have access to a computer and the Internet, particularly if you plan on earning your degree online.

What Does the Associate Degree Consist Of?

Typically, an associate degree will take two years to complete, although that can be flexible for online students. Over those four semesters, students will learn how to assist within a medical or clinical laboratory, brush up on their science and learn about the protocol of basic laboratory procedures.

To accomplish all of this, expect your syllabus to contain courses including phlebotomy, urinalysis, hematology and laboratory techniques. In some cases, the degree will also consist of a short internship where you shadow an existing laboratory assistant to learn more about what they do.
